Tips for Cleaning Outdoor Curtains

RSS

Cleaning outdoor curtainsCleaning your outdoor curtains periodically is just one way you can ensure your deck, patio, or other outside entertaining area looks its absolute best. Simple maintenance and upkeep, like cleaning outdoor curtains, won’t take much effort at all, yet can pay off big time in the long run, as you enjoy your investment for years to come. Here are some tips every homeowner should follow to keep their Sunbrella goods from Patio34 looking their best:

1) Clean up messes right away.

Spills and messes are inevitable–and that’s okay! But did you know that stains get worse as time passes? If you or a guest spill a drink or get a stain of some type on your outdoor curtains, act quickly to address the issue. A quick clean-up now will mean you can hopefully avoid the need for any deep cleaning or more abrasive scrubbing later on.

2) Soak extra-dirty fabric.

Create a cleaning solution that has 1/4 cup mild detergent to 1 cup of warm water. Cleaning outdoor curtains is as simple as submerging and soaking the fabric, then gently scrubbing trouble areas with a sponge or soft bristle brush. Rinse the fabric in lukewarm water, then hang to air dry.

3) Machine wash if necessary.

If you’re not getting the results you’re looking for, or just don’t have the time for hand washing, you can machine wash your curtains in cold water. Use only mild laundry detergent and hang them outside to dry. Remember–never use the dryer when cleaning outdoor curtains!

4) Tackle mildew with color-safe bleach.

Sunbrella fabric is made specifically to prevent mildew growth, but if you’ve noticed mildew growing on dirt or other debris that found it's way onto your curtains, color-safe bleach is your best bet to get rid of the problem. Mix 1/4 cup bleach with 1 cup of warm water, spray it on the affected area, then let it sit for about 15 minutes. Blot the area with a sponge or towel, rinse thoroughly, and hang the curtain to dry.
